Yoga etiquette

Master the essentials.

Life Yoga’s journey began with a simple idea that struck Mike in October 2015 during a drive home from Chicago. Little did he know that this idea would soon become a thriving reality. With determination and a dream, Mike started the process of building Life Yoga, even though he had little to no knowledge about yoga. Seeking guidance, he turned to the group fitness instructors at his Powerhouse Gym, who recommended a woman named Pam. A few days later, as the paint dried on the walls of the new yoga studio, Mike met Pam. Her presence infused the space with an incredible energy and excitement, accompanied by a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Pam’s impact was so profound that she brought along more talented instructors, including Lisa, Kate, and Jeni, who continue to be pillars of Life Yoga’s success to this day. With their collective vision, Life Yoga blossomed into a community-driven haven for yoga enthusiasts. Pam’s dedication eventually led her to become a part owner, and together with the other amazing teachers, they transformed Life Yoga into what it is today. After eight incredible years and over 58,000 yoga class check-ins, Life Yoga stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment, offering 42 yoga classes each week in a space double the size of its humble beginnings.

What is Yoga?

According to yogic philosophy, the physical practice of yoga was primarily designed to facilitate the understanding and mastery over the mind. At Life Yoga, we strive to provide classes that promote both a positive physical and emotional experience that leave you feeling calmer, more grounded, peaceful, and overall better than when you arrived.

What is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial yoga is a hybrid type of yoga combining traditional yoga asanas (physical poses) with the use of the aerial hammock (also referred to as a silk.)

What to expect

Before coming to class - Please consult with your physician to ensure that it is safe for you to start any new exercise regimen.

Register in advance - Students are encouraged to register and pay for classes at least 3 hours in advance using the Momence app or online at lifeyogami.com. Classes often fill up and advance registration ensures your spot in class.

Attendance - Our classes often fill up and many have waiting lists of other students who would like to attend. Teachers prepare and set-up the space for the number of students expected. We look forward to you attending class and ask that, if you are registered for a class and cannot attend, please cancel your registration as soon as possible in the Momence app or by calling the studio. This courtesy will open your spot for another student to participate.

Explore - We encourage you to try out a variety of class styles and teachers. The Life Yoga team is diverse and each teacher has their own unique personality and flair in their teaching style. Classes of the same kind that are taught by different teachers will vary slightly so give them all a try a few times to get used to verbal cues and feel the benefits of the practice. Classes are labeled as beginner, intermediate, advanced, or all levels to help you find what you’re looking for and determine what you’re ready for when you step on your mat.

What to wear - Dress in clothing that you can comfortably stretch, reach, kneel, bend over, and lie down in throughout class. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all students, we encourage everyone to be mindful about fragrances and/or scents that they may carry into class. If wearing a smart watch, please remember to silence all notifications before entering the practice space.

Best practices - The classroom opens 15 minutes prior to the start of class; should you arrive earlier than that, please take a seat in our lobby to allow space and time for other classes to depart and the teacher to prepare the space for your class. Once in the classroom, calmly prepare your mat, gather any props needed for class, and settle into the space.  Please be mindful of other students, their mats, props, water bottles, etc. and carefully step around them. We suggest that you avoid eating for an hour or so before class and use the restroom before class begins. Also, let the teacher know about any areas of your body that need extra care. Our teachers are able to offer a multitude of supportive modifications for every body. Teachers are often available before and after class.

What to bring - You will want to bring your yoga mat, a bottle of water, and, perhaps, a small towel. No yoga mat? No worries. We rent and sell premium Liforme mats. Please let us know upon check-in if you would like to rent or purchase a mat. Please leave shoes, coats, handbags, and cell phones in the storage area outside each studio space. Studio doors are locked when class begins and/or when the front desk is not staffed.

Check-in - Upon arriving to the studio, please check-in using Momence or the tablet located on the front desk. Most often you will be greeted by a smiling face but, in the rare occasion that our receptionist has been pulled away, please locate and tap your name onscreen and you will be checked in. If it’s your first time visiting Life Yoga, please wait at the desk for assistance from one of our team members.

Cellphones - We understand that, from time to time, you may need to bring your cell phone into the studio space. In the event that you must bring your phone into the practice space, please silence all notifications and position yourself as close to the door as possible. All calls must be taken outside of the practice space to prevent disruption to others in the class.

Class duration - Classes are typically one-hour (60 minutes) long and begin promptly at the time posted. Classes, workshops, and special events that are over one-hour in duration will be advertised as such. Please see our class schedule for start/end times. To ensure a mutually beneficial class experience for all students, we lock the door at posted class start times. Please contact the studio at 586-488-4938 if you are going to be a minute or two late and we will do our best to accommodate your late arrival.

Studio Temperature - The temperature in our practice spaces varies based on the type of class. Most classes are conducted in a room set between 70° and 74°. Heated classes are conducted in a room set between 75° and 85° and Hot classes are conducted in a room that is 86° and higher.

Teachers - Life Yoga is proud to employ yoga teachers with diverse backgrounds and a variety of teaching experience and training. Each of our yoga teachers holds a minimum credential of RYT-200 as designated by Yoga Alliance and participate in regular continuing education. You can expect each teacher’s unique personality and preferences to shine in their classes and, as such, classes of the same style that are taught by different teachers will vary slightly so we encourage you to try them all.

Healing Environment - We are pleased to offer a variety of healing modalities. In addition to public group yoga classes, we offer private one-on-one and small group yoga sessions, massage therapy, reiki, accudetox, and meditation sessions, as well as infrared sauna therapy. Please inquire at our front desk for more information and be mindful that healing sessions may be taking place while you move throughout the studio before and after classes.
